The Puzi River Aqueduct Bridge is one of the major water conveyance structures along the Beigan Canal of the Chianan Irrigation Canal. The first-generation aqueduct was completed in 1930, constructed as a Warren truss steel structure with a total length of 186.6 meters, serving primarily for agricultural irrigation and water transport.
During World War II, many infrastructures in Taiwan were heavily damaged by U.S. air raids, including this aqueduct. In 1980, as part of the government’s Accelerated Rural Construction Program and in response to the growing demand for industrial water supply, the second-generation aqueduct was constructed. This version adopted a reinforced concrete structure, extended to 200 meters in length, and has been in service up to the present.
In recent years, the second-generation aqueduct faced challenges such as insufficient water outlet height, limited bridge span, and inadequate seismic resistance. To ensure stable water conveyance along the Beigan Canal, the Chianan Irrigation Management Office, Irrigation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, launched the third-generation reconstruction project in 2023. After a two-year construction period, the project was completed in February 2025.
The project included bridge works, connection works, and landscape enhancement. The bridge works adopted a steel I-beam bridge structure with a total length of 276 meters. The connection works consisted of 40 meters of upstream and downstream channel sections, 59 meters of upstream and downstream box culverts, and a 125-meter temporary diversion channel. The greening and beautification works included the planting of shrubs and the construction of a landscape platform.
