The Solar Exploration Center, together with the Tropic of Cancer Marker, is located in Shaliao Village, Shuishang Township, about 4 kilometers from Chiayi City. The first Tropic of Cancer Marker was erected in 1908 (the 41st year of the Meiji era) by the Japanese to commemorate the completion of the north-south railway. The marker was damaged during the 1964 Chiayi-Tainan earthquake and has since undergone five reconstructions. The current structure, standing today, is the sixth-generation marker.
